A Sphynx cat is a breed of cat most categorized as being hairless. The cat is not actually hairless they have a layer of soft down. The Sphynx has large ears that are two to three inches high. He has a wrinkled body and lemon shaped eyes. There are two subspecies of the Sphynx cat, elf, and Bambino.
An Elf cat is a hybrid between a Sphynx and an American Curl. The cat has the down-covered wrinkle body that the Sphynx has. They also inherit the curled ears of the American Curl.
The Bambino cat is a cross between a Sphynx and a munchkin. These cats have short legs with some having back legs slightly longer than their front legs. They have the hairless appearance of the Sphynx but may have a puff of hair on the tip of their tail.
The Sphynx, Elf and Bambino cats are all very social intelligent and active breeds. These cats crave attention and like to cuddle in their owner’s lap. If you are not going to be home, it is best to get another cat or dog for the cat to socialize with. These cats get along with all animals and children.
The Sphynx is also very intelligent. The Sphynx will play with puzzle boxes, teaser toys, and climb up cat trees. These cats are the type of cat that needs something to do, or they might make mischief.
Care for your Sphynx
Despite the Sphynx, Elf and Bambino cats have short downy hair they need as much grooming as regular cats. The Sphynx will need to take a bath at least once a week. Otherwise, they will leave oil on your furniture.Wash with a mild baby shampoo making sure to get in between the wrinkles. The Sphynx will also need their skin moisturized with lotion or oil. If you bath the Sphynx while they are younger they will quickly get used to their weekly baths.
Sphynx does not have any hair to protect its ears from collecting dirt. It is important to clean out the Sphynx ears a couple of times per week. To clean the cats ears use a cotton swab and an ear cleaner. There will be a lot of wax in the Sphynx ears.
The Sphynx needs a warm place to sleep in the winter time. It is not a good idea to dress the Sphynx in clothes. The clothes might irritate the cats skin, or impede its movements.
